Primary State Agencies
United States
Updated - July 12, 2025

Each state has a primary police agency or division that is used by the state to enforce state law, especially traffic laws, just as munincipalities do with their police departments for local laws and ordinances. Some of these agencies are smaller organizations or divisions of a larger organization such as a Department of Public Safety. Others are independent police departments. Duties very by state, but each of these agencies, or divisions, employ the state troopers that you see out on the roads.
